"WOLVERTON MOUNTAIN"
WAS WRITTEN BY MERLE KILGORE IN 1962.
CLAUDE KING CO-WROTE THE SONG.

JOHNNY HORTON AND GEORGE JONES REJECTED THE OFFER TO RECORD THE BALLAD.    CLAUDE KING DECIDED TO RECORD IT HIMSELF.  HE GOT
A #1 HIT THAT WAS A CROSS-OVER FROM
POP TO COUNTRY.

"WOLVERTON MOUNTAIN" IS BASED ON AN ACTUAL PERSON,  AND AN ACTUAL PLACE.
THEME AND PERSON WERE IN ARKANSAS.

CLAUDE KING RECORDED 30 SONGS THROUGH THE 60s, 70s, AND 80s.   "WOLVERTON MOUNTAIN"  WAS THE ONLY SUCCESS.  HIS LAST SONG
WAS "COTTON DAN" IN 1977.

CLAUDE KING CO-STARRED IN A TV FILM "THE BLUE AND THE GRAY" IN 1982.  LIKE HIS MUSIC,
HE SEEMED TO HAVE FADED AWAY.
HE WAS BORN IN TENNESSEE IN 1933.

WOLVERTON MOUNTAIN
AND
     CLIFTON FLOWERS
They say don't go on Wolverton Mountain,
if you're looking for a wife.
'Cause Clifton Clowers has a pretty young daughter;
He's mighty handy with a gun and a knife.

  Her tender lips are sweeter than honey;
  and Wolverton Mountain protects her there.
  The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clowers,
  if a stranger should enter there.
All of my dreams  are on Wolverton Mountain.
I want his daughter for my wife.
I'll take my chances and climb that mountain;
though Clilfton Clowers, he might take my life.
Her tender lips are sweeter than honey;
  And Wolverton Mountain protects her there.
  The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clowers,
  if a stranger should wander there.
I'm going up on Wolverton Mountain;
it's too lonesome down here below.
It's just not right to hide his daughter,
from the one who loves her so.
Her tender lips are sweeter than honey;
  and Wolverton Mountain protects her there.
  The bears and the birds tell Clifton Clowers;
  if a stranger should wander there.
But I don't care about Clifton Clowers,
I'm gonna climb up on his mountain.
I'm gonna take the girl I love,
I don't care about Clifton Clowers,
I'm gonna climb up on that mountain;
and I'll get the one I love,
I don't care about Clifton Clowers...
